NEL MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS
Access, Achievement, Aspiration
April 2021 – March 2022
These new awards are a recommendation and endorsement of progress by accredited instrumental/vocal teachers or school music teachers within North East Lincolnshire.
All of the new music awards will:
- Reward talented pupils who are progressing well, showing enthusiasm, and commitment to learning.
- Help raise standards within Hub ensembles.
- Last for the duration of 1 year but will be reviewed termly.

Access Award
What you will receive:
- Membership of Mapas or Hub ensemble provision
- If applicable free loan of instrument
- Public performance and online performance opportunity
- Cost of lessons – for duration of 3 terms
10 x 20-minute shared lessons (2)
OR
10 x 30-minute group lessons
Cost of reeds and strings are NOT included
Criteria for Application:
Access Award: Beginner Award
Targeting: WCET Continuance/New Starters but those eligible for Pupil Premium
- Those pupils whose progress could be hindered by financial circumstances
- All applicants will need to be currently in a Hub ensemble but if not, prepared to attend one.
- Pupils showing a commitment to learning with noticeable progress being made on the chosen instrument.
- Pupils demonstrating active participation in WCET classes.
- Regular attendance at instrumental lessons.
- Genuine interest & enthusiasm for music.
- Ability to perform a solo at MAPAS/NELMEH/school concert.
- Taught by an accredited teacher within a NEL school/academy.
Requirements for application:
- A written recommendation from instrumental/vocal teacher or from school/academy music teacher.
- Evidence of PP or equivalent
- Application form available from Mapas.
Requirements for Video Audition
- To send a video of each applicant performing 2 short pieces of appropriate level. This will need to be complete with backing track or accompaniment. Pupils will need to announce the name of each piece.
- Applicants will be interviewed via a Zoom meeting and will be expected to answer 2 simple questions about their performance and also what they particularly enjoy about learning their chosen instrument.
Requirements for Video Audition:
- To send a video of applicant performing 2 contrasting pieces of appropriate level. This will need to be complete with backing track or accompaniment. Pupils will need to announce the name of each piece.
- Applicants will be interviewed via a Zoom meeting and will be expected to answer 2 questions about their performance and also what how they hope that this award would help them in their musical development
Achievement Award
What you will receive:
- Membership of Mapas or Hub ensemble provision
- If applicable free loan of instrument
- Public performance and online performance opportunity
- Cost of additional lessons or cost for lessons on a second instrument (30 lessons to be delivered throughout the year)
- 1 examination fee + cost of accompanist
Cost of reeds and strings are NOT included
Criteria for Application:
Achievement Award
- Minimum grade 4 standard or equivalent
- Commitment to learning and noticeable progress being made on instrument.
- Regular attendance at instrumental lessons.
- Tutor to evidence the reason for need for additional lessons on same instrument
- Pupil and tutor to identify desire for second instrument if this is the chosen option
- Pupil is either currently participating in Hub ensemble OR is prepared to attend one.
- Genuine interest & enthusiasm for music.
- Ability to perform a solo at MAPAS/NELMEH/school concert.
- Taught by an accredited teacher within a NEL school/academy.
Requirements for application:
- A written recommendation from instrumental/vocal teacher or from school/academy music teacher.
- Application form available from Mapas.
Aspiration Award
What you will receive:
- Membership of Mapas or Hub ensemble provision
- If applicable free loan of instrument
- Public performance and online performance opportunity
- A bespoke award based on a specific request from student and tutor to support musical progression and broaden musical development. This discretionary award could be up to the value of £750
Criteria for Application:
Aspiration Award
- Minimum grade 6 standard or equivalent.
- Commitment to learning with noticeable progress being made on particular instrument.
- An intended route into a career in music.
- Genuine interest & enthusiasm for music.
- Regular attendance at instrumental lessons.
- Pupil is either currently in a Hub ensemble or is prepared to attend one.
- Ability to perform a solo at MAPAS/NELMEH/school concert.
- Taught by an accredited teacher within a NEL school/academy.
Requirements for application:
- A written recommendation from instrumental/vocal teacher or from school/academy music teacher. A summary with some evidence of the bespoke nature of the requirements of applicant. If this involves the cost of an instrument, quotes will need to be included.
- Evidence of possible expenditure costs will be required.
- Application form available from Mapas.
Requirements for Audition: (Face to face)
- To perform 2 contrasting pieces demonstrating technical and musical ability.
- Applicants will be interviewed and expected to demonstrate how the scholarship will enhance their musical development and to include plans for next steps should they be successful.
